How to apply to GEC:
Please note that Genesee Early College is now accepting applications for Fall 2008 for 10th and 11th graders. Under certain circumstances, GEC will also accept appliations for a limited number of 12th graders.
GEC serves students who are interested in pursuing academic or professional careers in any of the health profession fields; and who are interested in, and capable of, succeeding at the university level. Examples of health science careers include, but are not limited to: pharmacology, mental health services, dentistry, sports medicine, veterinarian medicine, gerontology, prosthetics, phlebotomy, medical technician, health education, health care administration, health policy, radiation therapy, alternative medicine, public health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, cellular molecular biology, optometry, genetics, dietetics--and, of course, nursing and medicine. Genuine and passionate interest in a health science field is prerequisite for admission.
GEC requires its students to be capable of succeeding at the university level. Because the University of Michigan's Flint campus is our host school, it's important that students be able to meet the academic demands of a top-level academic institution, However, GEC recognizes that traditional high schools and high school curricula do not always meet the needs of all students. Students with potential who have not previously flourished in a traditional high school environment, or who have been underserved by their existing high schools, are encouraged to apply just as much as high achieving students.
The application process is as follows:
- Applications must be handwritten by the student, except for the required essay question. Parent/Guardian signature is required on the last page.
- A transcript must be included with the application.
- Two recommendation forms (included), from staff members at your school must be included. (You may choose to have one of these recommendations completed by a community member or coach who is not a relative.)
- A copy of your ACT, PACT, SAT or PSAT scores if you have taken them.
- A copy of your discipline profile and attendance profile will be requested from your current high school.
- The above materials will be reviewed by the Genesee Early College Admissions Committee. Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule a personal interview.
- Student will be required to meet appropriate scores on the language arts and mathematics placement tests. The purpose of these tests is to measure the likelihood of student success in a university setting.
- Following the interview, the students will be notified of their acceptance or non-acceptance into the program.
- All students and their parents should plan to attend a parent information session. If this is not possible, please contact Gary Weisserman at (810) 424-5298.
